In and Out of Youth and Lightness by Young Widows (2011)

Kind of Like: These Arms Are Snakes, The Swan King, Coliseum, Lightning Bolt
Genres: Noise rock, Post-Hardcore, Math Rock, Experimental
Preview: Myspace

I remember my first impression of Young Widows was them opening for Pelican and Russian Circles.  I remember being extremely impressed and excited about this band and the powerfulness of them.  They put on a good show and the heavy guitar riffs stuck with me.  But when I went to get their album at the time, Old Wounds, I listened to it and I didn't really think it conveyed that powerfulness they brought in the live setting and I was kinda disappointed.  I have only had a chance to listen to the first couple songs on this new album before I left for work, but I am liking this album more than I did the last.  Maybe their sound has grown on me more and maybe I will like Old Wounds more now, but this is still definitely worth checking out if you appreciate noise rock.

Middle States EP by The Appleseed Cast (2011)

Kind of Like: Moving Mountains, Old Canes, Explosion in the Sky
Genres: Post-rock, Emo, Ambient

Well, they will never go back to the Sunny Day Real Estate-esque band they were for "Mare Vitales" which I still think is a great album that was ahead of its time.  Still weird to think that came out over ten years ago now.  They went  from intense, heavy emo sound to a post-rock band featuring "inventive, intricate drumming, subtle guitar arpeggios and impassioned vocals".  They are still enjoyable and you hear their old sound bleed through now and then still, especially in the title track "Middle States".  You got to respect a band that evolves over time though.

If Only Just To Hold EP by Army of Champions (2011)

Kind of Like: Against Me!, State Lottery, Hot Water Music, The Bouncing Souls
Genres: Punk

Southern style shouty punk music.  These guys probably listen to a lot of Against Me...This is a new band, but they are almost nostalgic to listen to.

As High As the Highest Heavens and from the Center to the Circumference of the Earth by True Widow (2011)

Kind of Like: Codeine, Whirl, Earth
Genres: Shoegaze, Sludge, Post-rock

Occasionally female fronted slowcore three piece from Texas.  This album trudges along at a sludge pace.  Look out for these guys opening for Surfer Blood and Trail of Dead.

Tropic of Capricorn EP by Work Drugs (2011)

Kind of Like: Toro y Moi, Robot Science
Genres: Chill Wave, Electronica

Work Drugs are a self proclaimed "smooth-fi" group from philly.  What is smooth-fi?  From what I'm listening to it seems like it has that stripped down feel of lo-fi plus the smooth music associated with chillwave music.  Seems like some good summer time music; it's getting warmer and I am so excited.

"The Only Place I Know", The Fragile Season and Citizen Split (2011)

Kind of Like: Snowing, Featherweight, La Dispute, The Lawrence Arms, New Found Glory
Genres: Emo, Screamo, Post-Hardcore, Pop Punk, Punk

This is a pretty weird combo for a split.  The Fragile Season is the highlight for me, they are raspy, dissonant emo/screamo band.  Citizen is more of a New Found Glory-esque pop punk band.  I don't really enjoy New Found Glory, so a lot of "Walking Distance" reminds me of that, but that song is sandwiched between two songs that I actually can appreciate and sort of deviate from that sound.  Those two songs are almost like a mix between that pop punk sound and The Lawrence Arms.

Good Luck by Robot Science (2011)

Kind of Like: Melodium, E*Vax
Genres: Electronica, Ambient,

Taking a break from studying and finding an excuse to update this.

"Robot Science is Charlie Yin of San Jose, and his electronic music is instrumental, upbeat and filled with enough of beepy boopy sounds to draw forth a sizable smile while simultaneously putting all who listen into a dreamy colorful calm."
-Last.fm

Has a minimalist feel, but still enough layering/effects to keep things from getting too bland.  I think I stumbled upon this at the right moment in time because this is going to be the absolute perfect music to fall asleep studying to. The following link will send you to his bandcamp where you can preview the album and name your price for it.

Solar by Rubik (2011)

Kind of Like: Sufjan Stevens, LCD Sound System, Two Door Cinema Club\
Genres: Experimental, Indie, Electronica

Sometimes I'll pick out an album just from how the artwork looks; I'm starting to get good at finding new bands by judging a book by it's cover.  This is an experimental indie pop band from Finland.

“It’s pure prog for now people… or perhaps No Wave for those with less access to cheap heroin. Freaky.”
(Filter Magazine, USA)

Spraynard/Sundials Split (2011)

Kind of Like: CSTVT, Superchunk, Thousandaires
Genres: Punk, Indie, Pop Punk, Emo

It was probably destined that these two bands do a split together.  They complement eachother so it all comes together pretty well.  Sundials has a little bit more pop punk sound, and Spraynard has more of an emo sound on this split.

Manifestations EP By Mono/Poly (2011)

Genres: Experimental, Electronica, Hip-Hop

Mono/Poly (Charles E. Dickerson) is an electronic musician from Bakersfield California. His name is taken from the 1980’s Korg keyboard but pronounced “Monopoly”. The name “Mono/Poly” symbolizes his multifaceted audio productions.

Here's a preview of what your in for, and why I didn't put anybody for a "Kind of Like":

Kind of Like: Make Do and Mend, No Omega,
Genres: Post-Hardcore, Hardcore, Screamo

Algorithms by Meek is Murder (2011)

Kind of Like: The Red Chord, Everytime I Die (old), Me And Him Call It Us, The Armed
Genres: Grindcore, Mathcore, Chaotic Hardcore, Metal, Experimental

"Meek Is Murder is the solo project of Mike Keller, former guitarist of The Red Chord. Keller considers bands like Me And Him Call It Us to be a big influence in MIM’s sound. The fast, off-timed, technical riffs add solidification to this claim. Currently, Frank Godla is on drums with Sam Brodsky on bass."
-Last.fm

First off, great production on this. Secondly, I don't listen to the Red Chord, but I will for sure listen to this because it's pretty sweet.  I'm glad I decided to give this a listen and if you like any of the bands mentioned, you probably will too.

Eyes Like Knives by The Swan King (2011)

Kind of Like: Young Widows, Baptists, The Jesus Lizard
Genres: Noise Rock, Post-hardcore, Screamo,

Debut album from this heavy rock band from Chicago.  Good stuff.  Last.fm tags this with screamo, but I think it doesn't fit very well.  Only in certain instances.  It's much more like Young Widows which isn't really screamo at all.

Chimera by The Glass Canoe (2011)

The Glass Canoe is a psychedelic pop band from San Diego, California. The band consists of David Korrigan (Vocals/Electronics/Samples/Guitar), Max O’Reilly (Vocals/Samples/Guitar), Blake La Grange (Guitar/Synthesizers), Drew Galindo (Bass), and Justin Anastasio (Drums/Percussion). Their debut album, “Chimera” was mostly recorded over the summer of 2010 at David’s house. Max and David wrote the songs and Blake produced them. Summer Echoes by Sin Fang (2011)

Kind of Like: DevotchKa, Broken Social Scene, Anathallo
Genres: Experimental, Electronica, Indie, Folk

On his last.fm, the writer claims that Sindri Már Sigfússon (Sin Fang) is "the new king of lo-fi layered lushness".  His music is certainly lush and layered, from howling ambience to subtle psychedelic noises.  However, this is hardly lo-fi.  There is no fuzziness about it.  All of the layers are independent and pristine sounding, not muddled all together which is characteristic of lo-fi.  Great production is not something to gripe about, just an observation.

GOOD Friday Mixtape by Kanye West (2011)

Genres: Hip-hop

This is the bootleg of Kanye's new mixtape.  I don't like Kanye as a person, he's a prick and not one of the better rappers out there.  But you can't deny he makes good beats.  Does anybody else think it's ridiculous to have Raekwon and...Justin Bieber on the same song?  Other more notable artists on here: Mos Def, Kid Cudi, and Jay-Z.  Insert Imma gon let you finish meme here.

New Album by Boris (2011)

Genres: Electronica, Experimental, Drone, Sludge

Boris is a band my friend Kenny suggested I follow.  When I saw that the new album "New Album" by Boris had leaked, I initially thought it was either Heavy Rocks or Attention Please, which were announced to be released this spring.  I thought that this was one of those and somebody didn't know which it was.  However, the album art was something I hadn't come across (still really cool-looking).  After a little research, it turns out this is actually called "New Album" and is a planned to be a Japan-only release.  So, I take it they are releasing three albums this spring?  Ridiculous.  This  record features different versions of several tracks and includes the track "Hope" that is set to be on Attention, Please.  A lot of this sounds a lot different from what I have heard from Boris thus far.  I am annoyed that whoever opted to provide this rip decided to erase the japanese titles and replace them each with "japanese title".  Oh well, hopefully some of these songs will be on either Attention Please or Heavy Rocks so they can be identified in the future.

I had also been curious how all of them were doing through all of the stuff going on in Japan, here is what they had to say:

"Boris expresses our condolences to everyone who passed away because of current unexpected earthquake and tsunami disaster in Japan, and also our deepest sympathies for all of the people who have a hard time. Our thoughts and prayers are with them. All Boris members, our families and staff are safe now. Thank you very much for kind words and thoughtful messages. Hope, Boris "

End of Seasons EP by I Never Knew You (2011)

Kind of Like: No Omega, Kidcrash, La Quiete
Genres: Hardcore, Screamo, Post-Hardcore

A very new band from Orange County; they are still under 100 listeners on their last.fm.  This is their debut EP.  From the looks of the pictures on last.fm, it looks like a chick is belting out these skramz.  Either way this is a pretty promising start for this band.

Helioscope by Vessels (2011)

Kind of Like: Adebisi Shank, Enemies, Te
Genres: Post-rock, Math Rock, Experimental

I've been eagerly awaiting for this album to pop up somewhere because it has been getting great reviews usually 8 or 9s out of 10.  This is the second album from this Leeds based band, and they have once again traveled across the pond to our country to record with John Congleton in Texas.  Why travel so far to work with this guy?  Well, take a look at other bands he has worked on.  Not a bad resume.  This band is considered a post-rock band, but the record is not traditional post-rock in the least.  So, if you have grown weary of bands like Explosions in the Sky but still have once appreciated post-rock, you probably will really enjoy this record.  And if you don't like post-rock then you still may find a way to like this album.

Carnivore by Jovian (2011)

Kind of Like: At the Drive-In, I Am Alaska, Fall of Troy
Genres: Post-Hardcore, Screamo, Progressive

Wow, some great EPs coming out.  Haven't heard of these guys until today, but I guess they released two other EPs before going on hiatus and then releasing this.  I am very interested in a full length by them, but this EP will suffice for now.  Great guitar work that I would expect from any deserving band that considers themselves to be progressive post-hardcore.  There EP is name-your-price on their bandcamp where you can preview it or use the mediafire link below.

Take Care, Take Care, Take Care by Explosions in the Sky (2011)

Kind of Like: Mogwai, Godspeed, blah blah blah
Genres: Post-rock, Ambient, Experimental

Today was a very big day for leaks.  Here is the first of a few.  I've really wanted to listen to this album before I bought the deluxe double LP.  If you haven't seen it, take a look at their official website.  Bands are starting to really realize one of the best parts of records is the physical ownership of it and how great they can look.  This deluxe double LP looks like it folds into a house or something, and it just looks really cool.  And $25 is not too pricey for a more well-known sought after band.

As for the music, I am just getting into the second song, and I've already heard "Trembling Hands"  which was released awhile ago.  So I am about two and  half songs in.  Their previous album "All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone" was a monster, and it would be very hard to top such a great release.  From what I hear so far, this is a really good release.  Explosions are a pioneer and a top tier post-rock band, so it's hard to imagine them releasing something disappointing.  The ambience seems even further refined, you hear wailing guitars that sound like sirens in the background, church bells, and many other little details.  I have to sit and listen to this and I may come back and write a better review, but for now, take advantage of this link before it disappears.

Pearls And Diamonds EP by Surrogate (2011)

Kind of Like: Sun Kil Moon, Red House Painters, Deathcab
Genres: Indie, Folk

First off this EP feels more like a short LP with absolutely no filler.  It's about half an hour long, and has seven songs that are all over three and a half minutes.  The music is somewhat sophisticated indie with hints of folk and 60's pop music.  These guys have two releases from Tooth & Nail then opted to release this EP on their own as a full band, and most people are raving this is their best work yet.  I certainly am enjoying it.  Take care, take care, take care...

Self Induced Illness by Meyhem Lauren (2011)

Kind of Like: Biggie, Wu-tang
Genres: Hip-hop

Found this on The Needle Drop.  This up and coming "wordsmith" kind of throws it back to 90s hip-hop.  He claims to "a genre in Hip Hop that is currently on the verge of extinction...his style is reminiscent of hip-hop's golden era".  You can definitely see that, and it isn't just a rip off of those 90's hip-hop artists, it's just heavily influenced by it.  The main complaint is that this album is 2 hours long.  No little breaks/skits either, just beats and rhymes.  This can be a bit overwhelming; especially for someone that jumps quickly from one new release to the next.  Check out the Needle Drop to because I pretty much used a lot of what he said in his review that I concur with.  Oh and as you may guess, there are no mediafire links because this album is too massive.  Here is a multiupload link where you can choose between downloading from hotfile, fileserve, megaupload etc etc.  Whatever you are most comfortable with.

Update: I was sent an e-mail from Meyhem Lauren asking to remove the link, he said he put a lot of effort into the album and would rather have people purchase it off iTunes.  I will always respect the wishes of the artist.

Mile High City by Memorial (2011)

Kind of Like: Sparta, Failure, Quicksand, No Knife
Genres: Post-Hardcore

"Mile High City is the sophomore follow up to the Memorial's incredible debut 'Creative Process/Berlin' which saw a very limited release in 2009. Mile High City is 30 minutes of both melancholy but upbeat post-hardcore for fans of Renee Heartfelt, Failure, and Elliott."

These People by These People (2011)

Kind of Like: Akron/Family, The Doors, The Angels of Light
Genres: Indie, Experimental, Folk

This band is getting a bunch of buzz from opening for Glassjaw on their tour.  This is their debut EP, and I'm surprised they are touring with Glassjaw because they don't sound very similar to each other.  When I started listening to this it reminded me of Akron/Family but a lot more structured; they don't faze out into ambient oblivion.  It just seems like a contemporary 60's psychedelic rock band with occasional folk attributes.  Good stuff.

EP by Childish Gambino (2011)

Kind of Like: Kanye, Talib Kweli
Genres: Hip-Hop, Comedy

Childish Gambino is one of the many aliases for multi-talented Donald Glover, the very funny comedian/actor from Community and a writer for 30 Rock.  It was up until this point that I didn't know he also made music and rapped.  There isn't really much joking about this, he has catchy beats, good rapping and even has a set of pipes on him when he sings.  He also throws in his good sense of humor every now and then.  If you haven't had the pleasure of seeing his stand-up, here is an example:

Oh Brother by Joan of Arc (2011)

Genres: Experimental, Shoegaze, Drone

When I saw this I thought, is this the same Joan of Arc that just released Life Like.  It turns out it is, but this certainly isn't your daddy's Joan of Arc.  This is a vinyl/digital release only.  I could see this best suitable for vinyl release for sure because each song takes up one side of a record, so there are four 20 minute songs making up this album.

"Oh Brother (Joyful Noise) is one of the group's wiggiest albums yet. Or maybe that should be "groups'," since each side of this two-LP vinyl-only release contains a 20-minute composition played by a different combination of personnel; mastermind Tim Kinsella is the sole constant linking the four lineups, which include Hella drummer Zach Hill, Lichens drone maker Rob Lowe, and local jazz-percussion monster Frank Rosaly. The individual tracks are as unpredictable as Kinsella himself; they veer from frenetic free jazz to shroomy psych-drone to contemplative fingerpicked guitar interludes. There's even an occasional bit of the angular post-posthardcore commonly associated with his name, though I expect he includes that just to tease anyone still hung up on Cap'n Jazz."

Kerouac/The Long Haul Split (2011)

Kind of Like: Converge, Botch
Genres: Chaotic Hardcore, Hardcore, Punk, Progressive

I've been checking regularly for this split to leak after listening to Kerouac's "Cold and Distant, Not Loving".  This is a split between what seem to be two of the UK's more promising hardcore bands.  They complement each other extremely well.  This is the first major release for The Long Haul, I think, because all of their previous stuff has been demos.  The Long Haul is a bit more progressive, their time changes are pretty clever.  And does anybody think the singing in the first track "A Bastard Behind the Eyes" sounds just like Portugal. The Man's singer?  Wait, is that a girl?  Anyways, Kerouac is definitely not overshadowed, they are clever as well.  Actually they are pretty damn even.  Strongest (cleverest) split that's been put out thus far this year.  I'll commit to that.

Dance.Pretend.Forget.Defend by Fordirelifesake (2004)

Kind of Like: Rosesdead, Shai Hulud, Poison the Well, Misery Signals
Genres: Post-hardcore, Hardcore, Metal, Emo, Experimental

I know this is an older album, but I feel that a lot of people really don't know this band because they fizzled out shortly after releasing this second LP.  A few of my friends can't stand them, but I grew up going to see this band, and I have too many fond memories relating to them.  I just found out they are opening up for the Suicide Machines in April, and the first time I saw Fordirelifesake was when they opened for the Suicide Machines X-mas show like 8 years ago.  So, this show next month is going to be really nostalgic.  I feel as though they were an underrated band and were pretty obscure outside of Michigan, so hopefully some people can appreciate this.  Very great guitar riffs, their lead guitarist was a beast.  You know what word that everybody uses to describe a band or their musical taste? Eclectic.  It's an overused word, but I'm going to use it because this album is pretty damn eclectic.  The only thing that brings this album down are some of the shittier filler songs, if you avoid those, this was a classic album.  If only they put two or three really good songs on this...

Also, please try to disregard the "Kind of Like" bands, especially if you hate those bands.  I don't even listen to those bands, but I had a hard time thinking of bands that that Fordire was comparable.  Just give the album a listen.

Kind of Like: Converge, Black Flag
Genres: Hardcore, Punk

My Divider by Dinosaur Bones (2011)

Kind of Like: ...Trail of Dead, The Darcys
Genres: Indie, Progressive, Experimental

This is quite the debut from the Toronto based stoner indie band, it is extremely promising on first listen.  This band makes me very excited to see Trail Of Dead soon, in a good way.  There are a lot of good things going on with this album.  By all means, it is very impressive for a debut, I can only imagine the sophomore will be even better.

Defaults by Hard Mix (2011)

Kind of Like: Washed Out, Baths, Neon Indian
Genres: Electronica, Chillwave

I know I don't categorize all my electronic music on here well, but this is what people call "chillwave", which is like the artists Baths and Washed Out I have put up here in the past.  Basically it is characterized by their heavy use of effects processing, synthesizers, looping, sampling, and heavily filtered vocals.  In layman's terms, it's something you can chill out to or dance to depending on the setting.

Genres: Post-Hardcore, Hardcore, Screamo

Flora by Fredrik (2011)

Kind of Like: Alcoholic Faith Mission, Bibio, DeVotchKa (not as upbeat)
Genres:  Electronica, Indie, Folk, Experimental, Ambient

"Fredrik, a songwriter/sound mangler/concept artist three-piece from southern part of Sweden, embodies some of the most iconic Scandinavian experimental pop aesthetics: captivating melodies, rich layered arrangements and complicated charming instrumentation somewhat in the vein of Sigur Ros and Efterklang, but essentially in the language of trees. Without overloading the compositions, Fredrik builds layer upon layer of atmospheric, melodically overpowering and somewhat mystical soundscapes."

They dropped their smash debut Berserkabunga in the early months of 2011 on Sex Cave Records.
