Koda Vista by Joywave (2012)

Kind of Like: Air France, Robot Science, Neon Indian, Rubik
Genres: Indie, Electronica, Chillwave
Buy: Bandcamp
Preview:

This may be too poppy for some, but fuck it, I am really enjoying this right now.  Joywave is an indie pop band frm Rochester, New York and they are catchy as all get out.  They have a couple of pretty unique packages for sale on their Bandcamp.

The New Hire Bundle includes: 1) a Hi-quality download of "Koda Vista"in its entirety, and 2) a Physical 20-page 8.5"x5.5" "Koda Vista" lyric and art book.

The Director Bundle includes: 1) a Hi-quality download of "Koda Vista"in its entirety, 2) a Physical 20-page 8.5"x5.5" "Koda Vista" lyric and art book, 3) a Signed "Corporate Memo" on resume paper numbered to 100, and 4) Joywave Industries logo coffee mug.

The Executive Bundle includes: 1) a Hi-quality download of "Koda Vista"in its entirety. 2) a Physical 20-page 8.5"x5.5" "Koda Vista" lyric and art book. 3) a Signed "Corporate Memo" on resume paper numbered to 100. 4) a Joywave Industries logo coffee mug. 5) a 1 share of stock from the Eastman Kodak Company and stock certificate*. *Ceremonial certificate only. Buyer will receive credit to purchase Kodak stock independently of artist. No stock transfer will take place between artist and buyer.

This has to be the first time I have seen stock shares involved in buying an album.  Did they make some kind of deal with Kodak or something?  I don't understand.

I know an album is good when I keep changing my mind for which song to put on the StreamPad as the music goes on.  This is getting pretty cliche to say now, but this is a great fun summer time ride.  Roll the windows down.  Stay thirsty, my friends.  Wait until you get home in front of a bonfire before you start knockin' em back though.

Skai Nine - Ember [2012]

For Fans Of: Southern Shores, Washed Out, Radioseven
Genres: Electronic, Chillwave, Experimental
Spotify: Facebook
Preview:

Here's something from an electro-based music artist based in Washington DC. A self-proclaimed music schizophrenic (but otherwise normal person...or so we're told), Skai Nine draws inspiration from hip-hop and synth-pop sounds of the 80s. The song up in the preview is the electro-distorted funk single that just dropped as part of a string of free singles that will be released this spring. An EP containing all the singles as well as some other new material is set to come out on DhARMA (indie electronic label founded in 2012) this summer, so stay tuned for that!

Blackbird Blackbird - Summer Heart [2010]

For Fans Of: Small Black, Teen Daze, Washed Out
Genres: Electronica, Chillwave, Lo-fi
Spotify: Yes
Preview:

Mikey Maramag, AKA Blackbird Blackbird, is an electronica/chillwave musician from San Fransico, California. He just released a new single a month or so ago, which you can listen to here. I was planing on throwing that on the site, but it's just one song and I'm not even a big fan of it. So, download this album by him instead because 1) it's ten times better, and 2) it contains a chillwave version of "Float On". Yes, that "Float On".

Southern Shores is an Air France-esque Canadian duo on Cascine Records, and this is their latest EP. With its catchy beats, soul vibe, and disco influence, I expect this album to be on repeat in my car as soon as summer finally rolls back around. It's also available on vinyl for just ten dollars!

Best of 2011: Electronica/Hip-Hop

Happy Holidays!  So here is how shit's gonna go down.  Right now: Best of 2011 Electronica/Hip-Hop Edition.  Soon after that: Screamo/Hardcore Edition.  Then on the radio show Tuesday will be the big one: Punk/Indie/Emo Edition.  Let's get this started.

10.
Childish Gambino - "EP"

Donald Glover has had a pretty amazing year (music-wise, Community got cancelled).  After releasing this EP himself through his website and then doing a comedy/music tour, he skyrocketed into hip-hop community.  He even played this year's Rock the Bells; a huge accomplishment for a hip-hop artist.  I remember when I first heard of this.  His comedy cracked me up, so I had a feeling he would have a sharp tongue in the rap game.  It turned out that he had not only some incredible tongue-in-cheek lines but also a nice set of pipes and good beats.  He went on to release his debut LP "Camp" later on this year, but it didn't really hit me the way this EP did.

9.
Tycho- "Dive"

This hit this blog a little under a month ago, and although I didn't react to it like it was a big deal initially, it had become something I listen to quite a bit when I am in a relaxed mood.  He is currently touring, and I am really excited to get the live experience next month when he stops around here.  Look to get lost in this one.

8.
The Flashbulb-"Love is a Cold, Dark Hallway"

The Flashbulb is one of Benn Jordan's many aliases.  With this album he infuses his usual breakcore style with a heavy influence on jazz, and if you read this blog then you know how I have a sweet spot for jazz.  I am currently reading about the history of early jazz, and it is really fascinating.  I guess there was something good that came out of slavery.  Ok, that's horrible.  Anyways, I loved Benn Jordan's approach on this album, and it can be added to a collection of great works by him.

7.
Beastie Boys- "Hot Sauce Committee Part Two"

When it became clear that this album was going to happen this year, a lot of people were questionable: could the Beastie Boys make a successful comeback?  Although in my eyes this is not one of their best works, the answer for me is yes.  I still watch the half hour long music video that featured a plethora of great actors and comedians.  I think it was a great move by them.  When the album finally did come out, it was bumping in my car for a good while there.

6.
BadBadNotGood- "BBNG"

This was my introduction to Toronto's BadBadNotGood.  Instead of drawing inspiration from jazz songs for making hip-hop songs, this trio draws inspiration from hip-hop songs (along with many other things like Legend of Zelda, and the Joy Division) for making jazz songs.  This was the second of their two debut albums in 2011, and they have recently been seen on youtube working with Tyler, The Creator.  So, it's a wonder what this band will be up to in this coming year and who else they will collaborate with.

5.
The Roots- "undun"

This is the latest Roots album that showed the band return to their roots by focusing on struggle and making the best out of situation.  It is a concept album centering around the "semi-fictitious" character, Redford Stephens.  In the album, he is presented with the choice to make something out of himself or turn to a life of money and crime.  He chooses the latter.

4.

Robot Science- "Good Luck"

I remember the night that I discovered this album, I was about to start an all-nighter in preparation for an exam the next day.  This was on repeat pretty much the whole night.  I found Charlie Yin's chillwave with a 8 bit/Nintendo sentiment incredibly refreshing, and I bopped right along throughout the night.  I don't remember how I did on the test though.

3.
Nujabes- "Spiritual State"

I was first exposed to this artist through somebody that listened to our radio show, and I found out that this had been released very recently.  I featured it on the site, and in the process found out this was a post-humous release from Jun Seba.  This extremely talented Japanese hip-hop producer died in 2010 in a car accident.  Although fans do not consider this is strongest work, it still blows away many other producers and it certainly left an impression on me.

2.

MF DOOM- "Operation: Doomsday" (Remastered)

Ugh, I know it's not really fair to include this on a best of 2011 because this is a classic that came out 1999, but technically this remaster came out in 2011 and I love it.  Every hip-hop album I pick up lately has been put out by Stones Throw Records and I just want to tell them I love them for their reissues.  I hope that someday I can add this 4 LP set to my collection.  Hopefully sooner rather than later because they are sold out, and they are just going to get more and more expensive on eBay.

1.
Washed Out- "Within and Without"

At least I do have this one in my collection, along with the limited edition 7 inch.  However, I kinda wish I had known it was in a light blue and light orange option instead of the white one I ended up getting.  Those look a tad better.  This was the debut LP for Ernest Greene's following his acclaimed "Life of Leisure" EP.  When I am looking for something to play on my turntable, I have a tendency to pop this one on quite frequently.  It fits so many moods.  It also wins the award for hottest album cover of 2011.

New track from Terracotta Blue

Kind of like: Air France, Beat Connection, Robot Science
Genres: Chillwave, Electronica, Hip-hop

Terracotta Blue has posted a new track from upcoming debut LP, Takoma Park, set to be released 11-1-11. The track is entitled "White Cloud" and can be streamed HERE. Keeping with the same feel found on the EP Million Sunsets, "White Cloud" has a very laid back tempo and chill atmosphere created through layered electronics, reverb effected vocals and a general pulsing vibe. Definitely looking forward to hearing the rest of the album.

Era Extrana by Neon Indian (2011)

Kind of Like: Washed Out, Toro y Moi, Com Truise
Genres: Chillwave, Electronica, Psychedelic
Preview: NPR

"Overall, Era Extraña is fun to listen to for it’s emotional and intellectual qualities."
-SFStation

Behold the third (er...fourth?) big chillwave album to drop this year.  I'm throwing this up because the Washed Out show is coming up son, and it should be a fun show.  If you like Washed Out, you'll prolly like this guy, guy.

A Million Sunsets EP by Terracotta Blue (2011)

Kind of Like: Robot Science, Air France
Genres: Electronica, Hip-hop, Chillwave
Preview: Bandcamp

This will be the first time I post something first on here instead of blogger because blogger is down right now for the next half hour.  I case anyone has noticed, I really haven’t been posting as much as I used to.  I would like to keep going at that machine-like pace, but I actually have a lot of shit going on in real life right now.  It’s crazy, you know, having a personal life sometimes.  I would like to get back into that groove again soon, but for right now you’re going to have to deal with less updates.

Here is some more chill electronic music to listen to.  It is a lot like Robot Science and has a chillwave feel too it.  The dude that makes this music, Jay, says people that enjoy chillwave like it and so do people that like hip-hop.  I like both of those, so it works out pretty well.

No Way Down EP by Air France (2008)

Kind of Like: Boat Club, Delorean, Memory Tapes
Genres: Electronica, Ambient, Indie, Pop, Chillwave(?)
Preview: Pitchfork

The track on Pitchfork is a new track from his forthcoming debut LP, and following this little blurb is a download of his 2008 EP, No Way Down.  Not usually big on Pitchfork, but whatevs, I like this.

"Air France is a band from Gothenburg, Sweden. Their music has been described as “post-rave bliss”, “beach foam pop”, and “Balearic disco”, although they refer to their music as, “Disco Dub”. Their No Way Down EP received favorable reviews."

Within and Without by Washed Out (2011)

Kind of Like: Cut Copy, Robot Science, Toro y Moi
Genres: Electronica, Chillwave
Preview: NPR

I woke up at 5 in the morning, god knows why.  But it works out because look at what just hit the interwebs.  I featured Washed Out's critically acclaimed EP Life of Leisure back in February (click here).  Now here is Ernest Greene's debut LP called Within and Without.  The way it starts off abruptly makes me want to say this is a webrip.  That sided with the fact that the stream for the album just hit NPR yesterday and the album isn't due out until July.  Get your hands on this while you can; I don't know how long the mediafire link will work.  I'm gonna be chilling at the lake with this album today on my day off, I do believe

+Dome by Seekae (2011)

Kind of Like: Mono/Poly, Shigeto, Baths
Genres: Electronica, Chillwave, Ambient
Preview: Myspace

This is a glitchier version of all the recent chillwave bands.  Really soothing and catchy.

"For Sydney Electronica boys Seekae, it was always going to be hard to follow on from the heights of “The Sound of Trees Falling on People“, an album that FBi radio suggested was among the top ten of the decade.

Perhaps the greatest treat to lapse our ears from that album was ‘Void’, the great song that we played over and over, never got sick off, never passed in the jukebox and is still on high rotation after all of these years. If there were ever a better way to aurally transcend reality, I still haven’t found it.

Seekae’s new album ‘+Dome’ does exactly that … again! Set for release on 25th March with Rice Is Nice Records, ‘+Dome’ is jam-packed full of fat beats, soft spaces, plenty of diversity and enough synthesizers, drum machines and glockenspiels to wow your head off!"

Tropic of Capricorn EP by Work Drugs (2011)

Kind of Like: Toro y Moi, Robot Science
Genres: Chill Wave, Electronica

Work Drugs are a self proclaimed "smooth-fi" group from philly.  What is smooth-fi?  From what I'm listening to it seems like it has that stripped down feel of lo-fi plus the smooth music associated with chillwave music.  Seems like some good summer time music; it's getting warmer and I am so excited.

Underneath The Pine by Toro Y Moi (2011)

Kind of Like: Washed Out, Neon Indian
Genres: Chillwave, Electronica

There seems to be no shortage of chillwave bands emerging.  This guy is definitely part of the upper tier of this movement, although this album he seems to be moving away from that sound.  And he just looks like a fun guy:

Defaults by Hard Mix (2011)

Kind of Like: Washed Out, Baths, Neon Indian
Genres: Electronica, Chillwave

I know I don't categorize all my electronic music on here well, but this is what people call "chillwave", which is like the artists Baths and Washed Out I have put up here in the past.  Basically it is characterized by their heavy use of effects processing, synthesizers, looping, sampling, and heavily filtered vocals.  In layman's terms, it's something you can chill out to or dance to depending on the setting.

Life of Leisure EP by Washed Out (2009)

Kind of Like: Baths, Neon Indian, Cut Copy
Genres: Electronica, Chillwave

Happy Valentine's Day!  In case you haven't seen the new show on IFC called Portlandia, you are really missing out.  It's a show that basically pokes fun of hipsters that live in Portland, or hipsters in general for that matter.  It makes fun of people I know and even myself at times.  Anyways, the song "Feel It All Around" from this album is the the song featured in the opening sequence.  Also, Washed Out is going to be part of the Sasquatch festival in Oregon that looks to be only surpassed by Bonaroo (and The Fest) for the most bands I want to see in one place.  Here is a couple samples of the show:

Cerulean by Baths (2010)

Kind of Like: E*Vax (downtempo pre-Ratatat), Stateless, Dosh
Genres: Electronica, Chillwave, Ambient

Hip-hop continues to influence contemporary music.  This album is clearly beat driven, but it is pretty downtempo.  It makes out to be a great album to chillout to.  And just look at this puppy!:

Here is "Hall", the closing song of the album.  This is actually a less downtempo song from the album, I really like the whimsical vocals a little after halfway through.

Here's a link to the full album:
