Best of 2012: Screamo/Hardcore

Fun observation: 82% of these album covers are predominantly gray.

I first heard of these guys this past summer when I was looking for international bands for the summer sampler.  They are from Germany and this album is a great throwback  It has the tone, speed and rawness from older hardcore bands but it still has some really fresh sounding riffs.

Out of all the albums on this list, this is the one that was around for the longest.  I threw it up here way back in January and even thought it would've made the 2011 list if it had come out a month earlier.  The past month, I got turned onto it again while perusing the archives.  Still sounds great to me, if I do say so.

These guys squeaked into the best of 2012; you may notice that their feature is only a couple posts down from here.  I think the initial review was good enough, but in short, Shark Bait has gotten progressively better since they first arrived a couple years ago.

Another face from the Summer Sampler, this female-fronted band released this album under the name Veils.  Then a shitty band tried legal action against them, so they changed their name to Vales.  Veils or Vales, this album was thinly-veiled awesomeness.

Speaking of Veils, there are these dopes.  They stayed at my place for a weekend this past summer while they had some Michigan shows along their full US tour.  They took turns blowing me to get on this list, but they really didn't have to, I was going to put them on here anyways.  Who doesn't want to get blown though?  But seriously, I was pissed when these guys released this album, toured like hell and then promptly broke up.  I recently talked to Zoe and apparently there is a new band in the works, so let's look out for that next year, okay?

One of the first cool things I put up on this site was this band's self titled EP.  So when I heard they were coming out with a full-length in 2012, I began foaming at the mouth.  Then I got lockjaw and was holed up in the hospital for a little while, but the doctors told me that was unrelated.  Anyways, this album turned out being great.  When it came out, I broke out in a rash.  Then it started hurting when I was peeing.  How the fuck did they do that?  I just know these guys are going to read this and it is not going to translate well at all into Swedish.  Fuck it.

Native hasn't been doing shit since Wrestling Moves and Kidcrash is kind of being quiet too.  So when their Canadian counterparts came out with this, it was a welcome gift. They have similar vocals to native but music more along the lines of Kidcrash. Either way, this is some hard, mathy goodness right here. Dip it in the water so it will slide down your gullet more easily.

This release has been consistent for me all year.  When it comes time for me to move music off my phone to make room for new stuff, this always is left alone.  I am really excited to hear their album coming out next year which will feature "Bewildered", a song not on this album but one you can find on the summer sampler.

The title track alone made this album worth it for me.  YOU...ME...AND THE VIOLEEEEEEEEENCE!!!

A sort of pseudo-new full length, this album featured half new songs and half old ones from their previous EP.  It made sense because they are just starting to get introduced to the US market so a lot of people haven't even heard their older stuff anyways.  The new songs are great, I fake drum really hard in the car to "Callous".  After the 1:30 mark the drummer just kills it more and more.  Now we just need these guys to come visit the states with Birds in Row or something.

The king is back, and he sounds more organic and original than ever

What's Left to Let Go by Goodtime Boys (2012)

Kind of Like: Kerouac, Disembarked, Bastions
Genres: Screamo, Post-hardcore
Buy: Bridge 9
Preview: Bridge 9

Since I first got turned on to Goodtime Boys, they have become one of my favorite bands to come out of the UK screamo scene recently.  Are We Now has been played been a mainstay on my phone (artists come and go, because I can only fit a certain amount on there).  This album starts off with 5 new songs and then ends with the 5 songs on Are We Now.  This may seem redundant, but I think it is actually pretty smart.  Are We Now was very powerful on it's own, and they managed to add 5 new songs on the front end without that "power" being spread out more sparsely or diminished.  All in all, it just feels complete, Are We Now was the first thought and this LP is a realization and extension of that initial thought.  I am getting too philosophical, and I feel pretentious.  So, I will just let you enjoy this.

Make sure you buy this, Bridge 9 has a variety of neat vinyl options and other packages!

Goodtime Boys/Solutions Split 7" (2010)

Kind of Like: Veils, The Long Haul, Pariso //// Hot Water Music, Calvin Ball, Junior Battles
Genres: Post-hardcore, Screamo, Punk //// Punk, Pop Punk, Post-hardcore
Spotify: Hell naw

Recently, I was listening to Goodtime Boys' Are We Now, Or Have We Ever Been, and I realized how much I really enjoy this UK band for different reasons than I like other UK bands like Veils or Kerouac.  While they certainly fit in line with those bands, I feel like GTB have something distinct about them that I can't put my finger on.  Maybe it's more of a thrash/punk feel and more use of higher melodic chords compared to the low and churning mathy sounds. Then again those other UK bands use those too, and Goodtime does the churning mathiness.  Hell, I don't know, maybe it's just their vocalist, Alex Pennie.  He does have a pretty lengthy and eclectic resume, and he has a ton of raw emotion in GTB.  Yeah, that could be it.

Anyways, I was listening to their latest EP, and I was like shit, I need to figure out what these guys are up to or have done in the past.  I wasn't able to find any news about a new release from last years EP, but I did find out they started out with a split from another UK band, Solutions, a year before.  I really like splits like this, the bands complement eachother, but don't fall into all of the same categories; just the broad spectrum of "punk".  Or whatever the fuck you want to call it.

Goodtime Boys delivers 4 songs (well, 3 if you combine the intro with the first song) that are just as powerful as the ones in Are We Now, and I have a feeling I am going to be having both on shuffle now that I have everything they have recorded thus far.  The other band on this split, Solutions, is more of a Hot Water Music mixed with Latterman pop punk band.  They also really reminded me of another band we saw at Fest from the UK, Calvinball.

Overall, really solid split, and I really hope GTB is going to be working on new material soon.  Another EP would be nice, I am starting to appreciate hardcore EPs more than LPs.  Just seem stronger to me.  All killer, no filler.  Sum 41.

Speaking of the UK, I am really digging "Life's Too Short".  It's on HBO in the U.S.  I wish there was a clip of the scene in which the phrase "He just threw up on his penis" was used, but it isn't out there.  However, this clip is just as hilariously awkward.

Are We Now, Or Have We Ever Been by Goodtime Boys (2011)

Kind of Like: Bastions, Kerouac, La Quiete
Genres: Screamo, Thrash, Punk
Preview: Bandcamp

I got a bunch of posts on hand, so I am going to keep these write-ups short and sweet for now.  If you put a gun to my head and asked me why you should give a shit about this band, when there are plenty of other UK hardcore bands somewhat like this out there right now.  I would say that while Kerouac and Bastions have a mathcore and thrash feel, they don't have nearly as much of a screamo feel as these guys.  Don't get me wong Goodtime Boys can be disjunct, thrashy and mathy, but in a lot of cases they will have flowing, melodic (yet dissonant) guitar lines that is characteristic of bands like bands like La Quiete, especially as the album goes on.  I don't even know if that makes sense.
