Sun Eater - Sun Eater [2012]

For Fans Of: Psychedelic stoner trios
Genres: See above
Websites: Facebook, Bandcamp
Preview:

Tacoma, WA, representttt! This debut EP is the product of six months of hard work down in the basement of their house. I've been yearning for some hard psychedelic/stoner rock as of late, and these guys pretty much hit the spot. Here's a recent interview with the band in which they discuss this EP, Slayer, and the idea that their music sounds like the soundtrack to the apocalypse...if you were getting drunk at the apocalypse.

Neshama EP by Hollow Stars (2012)

Kind of Like: Grails, King Crimson, The Globes, Yeasayer
Genres: Indie, Rock, Experimental, Psychedelic, Noise Rock
Preview:

Hollow Stars began as a side project for ex-Deerhunter guitarist, Chris Mee.  Chris no longer appears to be part of the band, but they didn't let that get them down.  Instead, they forged ahead and recently came out with this effort. This reminds me of Grails, but instead of being a post-rock band with eastern music influences, this is like an indie/noise rock band with eastern music influences.  It is nice to see bands taking on music like this because it can be really hard to translate the scales and tendencies of eastern music and making it accessible to people here.

Apparently, this Atlanta group is up to big things, so look for more news coming in the near future?

Heavy Eyes by The Heavy Eyes

Kind of like: Sungrazer, Elder, Sahara Surfers
Genres: Stoner Rock, Blues Rock, Psychedelic
Preview:

The Heavy Eyes, based in Memphis, TN, are a groovy-as-all-hell blues rock trio that seamlessly blend classic rock, blues, and psychedelic textures within a thick and choking cloud of stoney haze. Roll a fatty, and be thankful for outstanding rock and roll groups like The Heavy Eyes.

Pink Magick by Giraffes? Giraffes! (2011)

Kind of Like: Tera Melos, Piglet, Volta Do Mar
Genres: Math Rock, Post-rock, Experimental, Psychedelic
Preview: Bandcamp

"Giraffes? Giraffes! is a psychedelic math rock band from Western Massachusetts made up of Joseph Andreoli (guitar, loops, effects) and Kenneth Topham (drums, percussion, glockenspiel, bells, pots and pans)."
-Last.fm

This is their latest album; they haven't come out with anything since Milk Mouth in 2007.  I think I may have featured that album on here as well.  It's pretty rad. from what I've heard so far.

Heritage by Opeth

Genres: Progressive, Psychedelic, Stoner rock, Death Metal
Preview:

Swedish death metal icons, Opeth, Return with their 10th studio album in 14 years. Heritage employs a very progressive and psychedelic feel and far less of the death metal influence they are typically known for. For those that aren't familiar with Opeth, traditionally they are known for 8-12 min epics that create a story with acts and a plot arc musically more so than "standard" songwriting would dictate. For fans of Opeth, Heritage brings back the dynamics and feel from Damnation and improve on it tenfold. This is a very unique record by a hugely influential and amazing band. Highly recommended.

Kind of Like: Washed Out, Toro y Moi, Com Truise
Genres: Chillwave, Electronica, Psychedelic
Preview: NPR

"Overall, Era Extraña is fun to listen to for it’s emotional and intellectual qualities."
-SFStation

Behold the third (er...fourth?) big chillwave album to drop this year.  I'm throwing this up because the Washed Out show is coming up son, and it should be a fun show.  If you like Washed Out, you'll prolly like this guy, guy.

Shady Grove by The Quicksilver Messenger Service (1969)

Kind of like: Quick-silver Hermes himself
Genres: Psychedelic, piano, rock-blues
Listen here: Mediafire

This band may be a stretch for this blog, but I think the music is fantastic and the pianist is the English nomad Nicky Hopkins, who plays with The Kinks, The Rolling Stones, and The Beatles. This is the only Quicksilver record I really enjoy, and its the only one Nicky plays and composes on. If you find yourself impartial to the album, at least give Edward, The Mad Shirt Grinder a listen and you shan't be regretting it.

Lost in the Glare by Barn Owl (2011)

Kind of Like: Elm, Earth
Genres: Drone, Psychedelic, Ambient, Experimental
Preview: Myspace

"Barn Owl is a drone / psychedelic band from San Francisco, California, formed by Evan Caminiti and Jon Porras (Elm) in 2006."
-Last.fm

“Barn Owl’s specific brand of drone-noise is akin to placing your ear against the Dalai Lama’s stomach and catching the sound of his reincarnation juices flowing”
-LA Weekly

Time for a chill out sesh.  I had a bunch of shit to do today still, but now I kinda just feel like laying around and listening to this.

Our Delicate Stranded Nightmare by Zechs Marquise (2008)

Kind of Like: The Mars Volta, Crime in Choir, RX Bandits
Genres: Experimental, Progressive, Psychedelic, Math Rock
Preview: Bandcamp

I briefly mentioned this band a week or so ago because they opened for RX Bandits and Maps & Atlases.  They also are the "sibling band" of the Mars Volta (Omar's brother is part of Zechs Marquise).  Here is their album, and hopefully I will be able to get my hands on Getting Paid, their new album, which comes out this fall.  Here is the album cover for that and a teaser.  After that is a link for their previous album (really digging the dark, surrealist album art for that).
