(Classic) Plague Soundscapes by the Locust (2003)

"I wanted to change the way people perceive music, or maybe just destroy it in general."- Justin Pearson, bassist/singer
Kind of Like: Daughters (old), An Albatross, Ed Gein
Genres: Experimental, Mathcore/Grindcore, Electronica, Noise Rock
Spotify: Here
Preview: Myspace

Oh boy, found this cd in my car the other day, and boy did I have fun with it.  This album clocks in at just over 20 minutes and features 23 songs.  So, standard grindcore song lengths.  It is a quick album, but it is extremely memorable to me.  From the hectic accellerandos of "Earwax" to the awesome synthesizer break down thirty seconds into "Virgin" to the time signature switches flowing back in forth at the end of "Halfie in your Pants" to the final intense laser gun shots/beats in the closer "Pickup Truck".  That is a fragment, consider revising.  All of those song names are shortened versions of course, the names are quite long.  This is how grindcore should be.

Fools Will Crush the Crown by The Rodeo Idiot Engine (2011)

Kind of Like: Dillinger Escape Plan, Converge, Ed Gein
Genres: Chaotic Hardcore, Grindcore, Mathcore, Thrash
Preview: Bandcamp

The french aren't known to be brutal as fuck, but these french guys are...brutal as fuck.  This was mastered by Alan Douches (hehe, douches...) who has worked with Mastodon, Dillinger Escape Plan and Converge.  If you liked that Ed Gein post earlier on this month, this is another angry/rip your face off album.  You can buy the LP/CD here.  Great job!

3 Way Split by Sorry, Honey, You Are Fiasco!/Bears in Ushanka/The Penguin Collector (2011)

Kind of Like: Kidcrash, The Locust, Ed Gein, Genghis Tron
Genres: Post-hardcore, Mathcore, Grindcore, Chaotic Hardcore, Breakcore

This split is nuts.  You are fiasco remind me a little of Kidcrash/La Quiete, and are pretty good.  They throw in a little variation for the storm that this split is about to throw you into.  The two bands after them are hectic as hell.  Bears in Ushanka and The Penguin Collector are more like grindcore bands.  Bears in Ushanka remind me of Ed Gein, and are pretty violent and technically cool sounding.  Meanwhile, I was pleasantly surprised with the Penguin Collector because the vocalist reminds me of the Locust, but the cool thing about them is that they throw in Breakcore aspect to them, they sound like they throw in fruity loops electronics into the grindcore mix to put together a mix of electronica and grindcore.  I think some people are calling that cybergrind now?  Whatevers.  I wanna say these guys are from Russia because whenever I try to find stufff about them I keep seeing that weird language that looks like a bunch of pi symbols and variations of it.

Darker Handcraft by Trap Them (2011)

Kind of Like: Converge, All Pigs Must Die, Everytime I Die
Genres: Hardcore, Grindcore, Mathcore, Metal, Punk
Preview: Myspace

I kept seeing this all over the place.  But for some reason I never got around to seeing if I liked it.  I saw they were coming to Toledo with Converge and many people compared them to Converge so I decided it was time.  These guys have speed and dischord like Converge, the riffs and attitude like ETID, and then some grind.  Mix it all up and rip a new asshole with it, and that's what this band is like.

Algorithms by Meek is Murder (2011)

Kind of Like: The Red Chord, Everytime I Die (old), Me And Him Call It Us, The Armed
Genres: Grindcore, Mathcore, Chaotic Hardcore, Metal, Experimental

"Meek Is Murder is the solo project of Mike Keller, former guitarist of The Red Chord. Keller considers bands like Me And Him Call It Us to be a big influence in MIM’s sound. The fast, off-timed, technical riffs add solidification to this claim. Currently, Frank Godla is on drums with Sam Brodsky on bass."
-Last.fm

First off, great production on this. Secondly, I don't listen to the Red Chord, but I will for sure listen to this because it's pretty sweet.  I'm glad I decided to give this a listen and if you like any of the bands mentioned, you probably will too.

Subvert the Dominant Paradigm by Noisear (2011)

Kind of Like: Social Infestation, Cattle Decapitation, Ed Gein
Genres: Grindcore

This is more of a death metal meets grindcore (deathgrind) band but there is no way I am throwing up three new obscure genres on the sidebar.
