What's Left to Let Go by Goodtime Boys (2012)

Kind of Like: Kerouac, Disembarked, Bastions
Genres: Screamo, Post-hardcore
Buy: Bridge 9
Preview: Bridge 9

Since I first got turned on to Goodtime Boys, they have become one of my favorite bands to come out of the UK screamo scene recently.  Are We Now has been played been a mainstay on my phone (artists come and go, because I can only fit a certain amount on there).  This album starts off with 5 new songs and then ends with the 5 songs on Are We Now.  This may seem redundant, but I think it is actually pretty smart.  Are We Now was very powerful on it's own, and they managed to add 5 new songs on the front end without that "power" being spread out more sparsely or diminished.  All in all, it just feels complete, Are We Now was the first thought and this LP is a realization and extension of that initial thought.  I am getting too philosophical, and I feel pretentious.  So, I will just let you enjoy this.

Make sure you buy this, Bridge 9 has a variety of neat vinyl options and other packages!

Winter International sampler and other happenings!

Phew!  Finally got some downtime, so I am going to give you guys a bunch of updates about all that is going on.

1.) You'll Live orders are out! You should be getting your records any day now if you preordered the You'll Live album.  The pop-up idea turned out really cool, I think, but time will tell.  I am starting to see it posted on tumblr, but in the near future there should be reviews surfacing, and I will post those as they come in.

2.) Only 3 Chalk Talk Bile Colored vinyl left! We have a bunch of the black ones left, but we are nearly out of the colored records.  Get them before they are gone!

3.) Only 2 William Bonney Good Vibes LPs left! Seriously guys, the band sold out while on tour and Songs from the Road is either out or nearly out, I believe.  So, these are literally the last two for this pressing left.  We have no immediate plans to repress this but we may next year.  So if you want to be one of 300 people to have the first pressing, order very soon!

4.) Free zines with future orders?! I was approached by the guys at Kyeo Speaks  about taking zines in bulk to distribute, and I should be having a couple samples arrive in the mail soon to look over.  If all is good, we will get a bunch of these to be given for free with any orders.

5.) New face to be added soon?!  Speaking up up in the air type stuff, I am also talking with the boys in SRVVLST about putting out a new 7 inch early next year.  If you haven't had a chance to listen to them, head on over to their bandcamp and give them a listen!

6.) Peace Be Still is working on new material! I have gotten a few samples and rough cuts of their new songs, and I am really excited to hear the end product.  Look out for new stuff probably closer to the new year I would guess.

7.) Taking submissions for the Winter International Sampler! I want to do a winter edition for the International Sampler that we had this summer.  If you are a band outside of the U.S. and want to be on it, send an e-mail to sometimesigetdrunk@hotmail.com  with the subject "Winter Sampler".  If you haven't got your hands on the one from this past summer, you can get it for free here or on our bandcamp along with the rest of the material we put out.  Free downloads for all!

That's it for now, make sure you add us on Facebook  for more frequent updates!.

Black Pussy SW Tour 2012

Kind of like: Brant Bjork, Graveyard, The Cars, Jimi Hendrix,
Genres: Psychedelic, 70's Rock, Stoner Rock
Preview:

"Black Pussy is a kerosine-soaked warning against the commercial, pretentious pop overkill and sounds like a dirty, immense engine coming down a two-lane blacktop." -Facebook

Portland Oregon based Black Pussy is on the road! Their 70's influenced brand of sexy psychedelic rock embraces the ethos of "doing it right". With vintage gear (Fender Guitars and SUNN amps exclusively) and an almost obsessive attention to tone, this sextet crafts articulate and original music with hooks that will draw listeners in and take them on a ride through time and the cosmos.

On Blonde is the debut LP put out on Portland's own Made In China Records. Pick up a copy on quality 180 gram vinyl through the Made In China Webstore. And listen to On Blonde in it's entirety below. It comes HIGHLY recommended to catch a live show and see the experience in person.

I Would But I'm Baroque by SRVVLST (2012)

Kind of Like: Native, CSTVT, Duck. Little Brother, Duck!
Genres: Post-hardcore, Math Rock, Screamo, Punk
Buy: Bandcamp
Preview:

I am excited about this album for a couple of reasons.  One of which is that it is fresh and really good.  The other is that I am currently in talks with the band about putting out a seven inch with them next year of new material.  After doing a few releases with solidified bands, I am excited about helping new, fairly unheard band.  It's really hard finding bands like this before they are inevitably scooped up by a more....professional(?) label.  I also like bands that have a good sense of design, and I really like that each track has its own little picture with each track.  The only issue is that they are from Columbus, but I guess I may be able to forgive them. Hint, I live in Ann Arbor. Double hint, the breakdown in "Work Friends" is an immediate highlight for me.  Shit happens, and sometimes things don't end up panning out, but I have a feeling we will have more news about these guys soon.

Kids on the Run by Bummer (2012)

Kind of Like: Solids, Young Lungs, Campaign
Genres:Punk, Pop Punk, Grunge, Indie, Garage Rock
Preview:

This reminds me so much of Solids, who also happen to be from Montreal like this band.  I would have to say these guys are a bit more raw than Solids, and have less of a poppy feel (more yelling, less singing).  A lot of their artwork is done by Jonathan Robert. I have been browsing his stuff and I really like this guy's style.  I also really like this band's style.  Seacrest, out.

New Colonies by Secret Arms (2012)

Kind of Like: Native, Pg. 99, Capsule, Animal Faces
Genres: Post-hardcore, Screamo, Mathcore
Preview:

I was just listening to Anomie by Animal Faces on the way from class back to my car, and as I listen to this album, I get a really similar feel.  Anomie is one of my favorite albums so far this year, so I have a feeling this may leave quite an impression on me.  This album was engineered by a guy from Capsule, so you already know the production is going to be tight.

The album cover reminds me of more recent Suicide Machines album covers (War Profiteering, A Match and Some Gasoline) with the not-so-subtle political implications.  This is a fun one.

Chronopoly by Town Portal (2012)

Kind of Like: You Slut!, Stage Kids, Bulletproof Tiger
Genres: Math Rock, Post-rock, Post-hardcore
Buy: Bandcamp
Preview:

Some really great stuff from this instrumental band from Denmark.  They got the mathy-ness, the heaviness and the softness.  Lots of transitions between odd key and time signatures.  I have a lot of submissions and stuff to go thru so I am going to keep this one pretty short.  If you like You Slut!'s Medium Bastard from earlier this year, you will probably really dig this.

Until the Quiet Comes by Flying Lotus (2012)

Kind of Like: J Dilla, Quasimoto (Madlib), Teebs, Mono/Poly
Genres: Electronica, Hip-hop, Experimental
Buy: Bleep/Warp Records
Preview:

I think that video preview is enough, but the phrase "feat. Thom Yorke" in the track listing should also be pretty convincing.

An Obscure Moon Lighting an Obscure World by Glocca Morra (2012)

Kind of Like: The Greek Favourites, Stable Boys,
Genres: Punk, Emo, Post-hardcore
Preview: Spotify
Buy (serious): Kind of Like Records

So, Ghoul Intentions came out last year and then Just Married this year.  It strange because Ghoul Intentions was pretty raw and rough around the edges, but not in a bad way necessarily.  Then Just Married comes out and it is almost like culmination of all the work before Ghoul Intentions came out.  It was more melodic like their older stuff, and more, for lack of a better term, twinkly.  It seemed like a odd regression back to their older sound, but it turns out Just Married was written before Ghoul Intentions and just had taken so long to get all the production stuff done that it was released after.  Honestly, I love Just Married, much more than I liked Ghoul Intentions, so I was a little worried about material coming up next.  Well here we are, as far as I know this is their newest/last recorded stuff, and I think I was worrying for nothing. The feel of this album seems to fall right in between the sound of Just Married and Ghoul Intentions; it has a cleaner more melodic feel, but there is a dissonance about it that still sounds a lot different from Just Married.  The vocals are even different, and I actually really like them the way they are now.

These guys have been known for not taking themselves seriously, and this EP has carefree all over it.  The twinkle genre is getting older/less original by the minute, and good for them for wanting to get away from that niche.  This is a nice balance between the raw/dissonant feel of their last EP and the catchyness/great transitions and riffs of Just Married.  There are some parts on here that I think is some of the best stuff they have done to date.  But which do I like better overall?  I think I will sort that out with the end of the year lists.

EP by Lord Kaye (2012)

Kind of Like: Adebisi Shank, Battles, Yeasayer
Genres: Electronica, Math Rock
Preview:

Be forewarned, if you hate Adebisi Shank, then you will most likely hate this band.  This is the debut solo album for the guitarist of said band.  It's a mathy electronic mess, and you can definitely hear what he lends to his band Adebisi Shank, which is...a lot.  There are even recognizable melodies from Adebisi albums integrated in this EP.

Blues Note Records

I don't think this album is on there, but I do own it and I just really like that picture.  What a badass.

Genres: Jazz, Blues
Preview/Listen: Spotify

I know this may be way off from some people, but if you have any interest in jazz at all, you should delve into Blue Note Records Spotify app.  The amount of streaming music to explore is overwhelming, which makes it both good and bad for studying/homework.  Good, in that you can just let the music go and put your head down and grind away.  Bad, in that I constantly want to go back and look for more stuff instead of focus on my work.  Guess which I am doing now.

Yeah, it's not really and album or a download, but it is a shitload of awesome music at your fingertips.  Enjoy?

This album is on there.

A Plethora of News!

Hey guys, wanna throw some things at you.

1)  Peace Be Still is going to be visiting the United States for a couple dates. They have a show in Grand Rapids tomorrow with Hop Along and Charles the Osprey, and a free one in Chicago the next day at the Livewire Lounge.

10/2 Event link
10/3 Event link

2)  Everything is on track with the You'll Live release.  We should have them ready to ship in about three weeks

3) State Lines is going on tour soon, and they want people in the areas they are hitting up to listen to their new album beforehand.  They are being proactive so they get as many people out as possible, which is smart.  Their EP via Tiny Engines is rad anyways, so it's a win win.  As far as I know, they are coming to Michigan and the surrounding areas sometime in January, so be on the lookout for that.

4) I've been meaning to do this for awhile, but I haven't gotten around to it until now.  My sister has a webcomic that deals with her and her partners journey in being a same sex couple and their pursuit of having a child.  I am pretty excited that I am going to be an uncle (I also feel somewhat old).  I am very proud of what she is doing.  Her comic is on tumblr, so you can follow her there.

Future Reference by Legs Like Tree Trunks (2012)

Kind of Like: Maps & Atlases, Rooftops, Invalids
Genres: Emo, Math Rock, Indie
Preview:

You drive when you're high, and it feels like you're flying.

Sound familiar to anybody?  Right?

Anyways, I really wanted to help these guys with a Michigan show back in August on their tour.  I tried everybody I could in Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, Ann Arbor, and Detroit.  People were either "busy" or never responded.  I hope those people come to this post and kick themselves in the asses for not getting a show for these guys and more importantly, not getting to see them.  Then hopefully when they tour again, it will be a lot easier to get something set up for these guys.

Alright, that's all for today.  I feel accomplished, but now I need to feel accomplished about this homework, and now I have three new albums to listen to while I do that.  Hooray!
