worst.summer.ever by Del Paxton (2013)

Kind of Like: Braid, Weatherbox, American Football
Genres: Indie, Emo, Pop Punk
Preview:

These guys have been in a few other bands from upstate New York, but the one that I was familiar with was Month.  Month was a pretty good band, but I am liking these guys more.  Solid harmonies, strong fuzzy tones with some very American Football-esque clean parts, and great mixing/mastering overall to tie it all together.

Sleep Kit by Sleep Kit (2013)

Kind of Like: Pride and Ego Down, whenskiesaregray, continent.
Genres: Post-hardcore, Emo, Screamo
Preview:

Holy shit, it's been a minute, right?  I decided I needed to update my music library and I figured I would give this a post as well.  I want to give a proper post for being gone for so long, but my laptop is about to die and my power cord is all the way in the other room, so this is going to be short for now.

These guys are part of what is becoming a very american-friendly screamo/emo movement in Germany.  The first track starts kind of slow and didn't really hook me in right away.  Once you get through the second song, you will probably will want to finish it because it just gets better from there.  There are some pretty fun riffs in this and you would be wise to give it a try.

Brainless God by Direct Hit! (2013)

Kind of Like: The Dopamines, The Thermals, Mixtapes
Genres: Pop Punk, Punk
Preview:

Here's some smart but still catchy punk rock.  I have drifted away from bands like this, and it is really nice to get submersed back into the kind of stuff that I almost listened to exclusively for a period of time.  As far as punk rock concept albums go, this has to be the best one I have heard since The Lawrence Arms's The Greatest Story Ever Told.  That album is perhaps one of my favorites of all time, so that is a huge compliment to this new release.

What a Time to Be Alive by Scout (2013)

Kind of Like: State Lines, The Sidekicks, A Great Big Pile of Leaves
Genres: Indie, Emo
Preview:

I miss the old embedded bandcamp players, where you could pick whatever color you want for the background and font.  Now you only get to pick between like eight generic colors, how boring?

If you are looking for something that will reel you in easily and have you singing along after a few listens, then here is a new-ish New York band for you.  Think of catchy anthems that are similar to that of State Lines.  I swear, I thought of the bands in the "Kind of Like" section before I even saw this event for their album release show (which you should probably go to if you like any of the bands mentioned in this post).

Forgettingism by Lions (2013)

Kind of Like: Damiera, Look Mexico, Pennines
Genres: Math Rock, Pop Punk, Indie, Post-hardcore
Preview:

So, I have a bit of time waiting for my NHL 14 - Early Access to download, and I just caught wind of these guys from Tennessee.  I have never really heard of them up until now, but they sound incredibly tight butthole.  Everything sounds nice and mixed/mastered well and there are some really great riffs going on that just makes me like them right off the bat.  Check these guys out!

New Forest Floors by Rookie Town (2013)

Kind of Like: Living with Lions, Free Throw, Tiny Moving Parts
Genres: Pop punk, Emo, Post-hardcore
Buy: Driftwood Records
Preview:

I have to hand it last.fm's "my mix" station; they know how to string together a great mix of favorites with bands I ought to be listening to.  The song "Valley Lily" popped up while I was studying, and I took a quick break to see what these guys were all about.  This band has a pretty great mix of all the genres listed.  With this being the debut album from these Washingtonians, it will be interesting to see what they come out with next.

Orthodox by Native (2013)

Kind of Like: So Many Dynamos, Kidcrash, Caravels
Genres: Post-Hardcore, Punk, Math Rock, Post-rock
Buy: Sargent House
Preview:

As soon as I heard rumblings of Native's next endeavor, I was beyond excited.  It has been almost 4 years since Wrestling Moves!  These guys have always been overall a really solid band in my eyes.  They seem to take a few steps forward with each release and they absolutely kill live shows, which are all I really ask for in a band.  I feel like the biggest biggest jump forward on this release so far is how the vocals have evolved.  From the standard baseline yell throughout this to softer, haunting coos/chants, there just seems to be much more variety in the vocal department.  They have seemingly altogether ditched the high-pitched single-toned scream/yell from Wrestling Moves to something that is much more chromatic/vibrant.  The music really just picks up right where Wrestling Moves left off, and there is definitely nothing wrong with that.  I have only listened to this guy one time through and I can already tell there are going to be many more listens of this in the near future.  As excited as I am right now after the initial reaction, I just know how great it is going to be to digest this.

Oh yeah, also stoked to catch them this Saturday, check them out on tour.

Tainted by Atalanta (2013)

Kind of Like: Adaje, Lizards Have Personalities, Vowel
Genres: Screamo, Post-hardcore, Doom
Preview:

With the abrupt ending of Adaje last year after their full US tour and release of Yore Veils, I was left wanting more bands with a sound like theirs.  It was screamo, but it was also concentrated chaos dripping with influences of doom metal and post-rock.  After listening to this album by Chicago's Atalanta, I think I found a band with a striking similarity to that.  Instead of ending however, it seems like this band is just beginning.  If you are in Chicago, you can catch these guys with Droughts and William Bonney (second to last show ever) on July 19.

Shirokuma EP by Shirokuma (2013)

Kind of Like: Mahria, Disembarked, No Omega
Genres: Emo, Screamo, Post-hardcore
Preview:

The best part about doing this label and more specifically putting out international samplers now and then, is the fucking amazing talent I would've never heard from all around the world.  These swedes absolutely kill it for me.  This is the kind of emo/screamo that tends to hook me right away with disjunctive, dissonant, math-y riffs, but ones that tend to be more catchy than technical.  Fuck this pretentious jargon.  Just listen.

At Aulis by Coalspur (2012)

Kind of Like: Mahria, Animal Face, Vowel
Genres: Post-hardcore, Screamo, Emo
Preview:

This three piece from Edmonton has jams that remind me a lot of fellow Edmontonians, Mahria.  The vocalist reminds me a bit of Jacob Bannon where he yells instead of screams (Like in Hanging Moon).  And there ain't nothing wrong with that.

This is their EP from 2012, but they also have live demos of new material that will give you an idea of what their full length is going to have on it.

Demo by Charlie the Knife (2013)

Kind of Like: Elliot Smith, CSTVT, Caravela, Tony Clark
Genres: Indie, Emo, Ambient
Preview:
Charlie the Knife is the solo project of Will McEvilly, the guitarist from CSTVT.  It's pretty exciting seeing anything related to said band come out, and this demo could really be a formal EP.  The sound quality/production is much better sounding than what a lot bands try to pass off as an EP.  Here is a description from Will: "..the project is occasionally ambient/often cheesy power pop about living/behaving poorly in Chicago.  My girlfriend told me it sounds like Elliot Smith meets Cursive and my "too punk for anything" friend said it sounds like something that would be popular on Saddle Creek ten years ago."

Get Even by Odd Dates (2013)

Kind of Like: Charles the Osprey, Giraffes? Giraffes!
Genres: Math rock, Emo, Screamo, Punk
Preview:

This is a pretty new band coming from out of Grand Rapids, Michigan.  This guitar/drum duo will remind you of other guitar/drum math rock duos posted on here but with much more screamo/emo influence shining throughout the album.

Red Desert Orgy by Mudbath (2012)

Kind of Like: Gloomy Sunday, Ufo Gestapo, Electric Wizard
Genres: Stoner Rock, Doom, Metal
Preview:

It's been awhile since I have posted/listened to some heavy doom stuff.  This band hailing from Avignon, France put this EP last year and it trudges along like a giant behemoth destroying everything in its wake.

Take Your Time by Letters Home (2012)

Kind of Like: Braid, Built To Spill, Superchunk
Genres: Emo, Punk, Post-hardcore
Preview:
This trio is from Tallahassee, Florida and features members from Send Away Stranger, Ex-Breathers, and former member of Look Mexico. If you live in the Florida area and like this EP, be on the look out because they don't play many shows.  So if you see they are playing, you won't want to miss it!

Catholic Guilt by Vulture Smile (2012)

Kind of Like: The Get Up Kids, Waytaker, You'll Live
Genres: Indie, Emo, Screamo
Preview:

A really accessible indie band with hints of emo/screamo influences.  Imagine You'll Live with quite a bit less screaming.  They are from San Jose; too bad about the Sharks (sorry, not sorry; you have demonized the Red Wings in recent years).  Hockey rivalries aside, check these guys out!

Updated submission e-mail

Hey bands/people,

I have changed the submission e-mail to: sometimesigetdrunk@gmail.  It used to be a hotmail account, but I have been using gmail for awhile and I like it better than outlook, plus I can link all my gmail accounts together and view them all at once easily.  I just spent the better half of this morning sifting through hundreds of submissions dating back to last year on the old e-mail, and I plan on putting the better submissions up throughout this week.  If you have submitted in the past and don't find yours up here in the coming days, don't be discouraged.  Just be tenacious and don't give up, sometimes it is just pure luck I happen to get to them (try the chatbox as well).  A little tip though, I like personable e-mails; if you send something that looks like a press kit with tons of pictures and lots of links/paragraphs, I probably will not give it a second look.  I tend to look at the e-mails that are short and sweet and has an easy bandcamp link to listen to the music too.  Full album links, not just singles and what have you.

Thanks for everything,
Poo

This Must Be The Sunks by The RCSN (2012)

Kind of Like: LVL UP, Stereolab, Native America
Genres: Pop, Ambient, Indie
Preview:

This project is the solo effort of Zack Schwartz from Glocca Morra.  After helping establish a portfolio of timeless emo/punk material with said band, it seems that this solo material is a more laid-back outlet for dreamy ambient indie music.  Wait, Glocca Morra already is pretty laid-back in their own right. Oh well, enjoy this release from last year and he also has a teaser track for an upcoming release.

Life is Hell, and Hell is Lost by Old Man Winter (2013)

Kind of Like: Converge, Punch, No Omega
Genres: Mathcore, Hardcore
Preview:

It's been awhile since I've been a blog that's beaten everyone to the punch. So, instead of the proven well-documented stuff I have been posting lately, here is a relatively new and unknown band from out of New Hampshire.  They just put their first EP out this past Tuesday and it's heavy.  It shows a lot of potential and they made a great first impression by going in on production instead of a 8 track in somebody's basement.

Lookit these silly tourists
Kind of Like: Continents., Raein, Saetia
Genres: Screamo, Post-hardcore, Emo
Buy: Bandcamp
Preview:

Crap, I wish I posted this before their U.S. tour started instead of now that it is halfway over.  However, you still have plenty of chances to catch this band from Germany, and better late than never.  They are playing a few of those dates with SRVVLST, and apparently both of those bands are going to be crashing at my place tonight.  I hope these germans like shitty american beer because I can't afford a keg of nice stuff right now.  Listen, download, and make it out to see these guys!  They came a long way!

One of Us Is the Killer by Dillinger Escape Plan (2013)

Excellent promotion for Tama, right?

Kind of Like: Botch, Every Time I Die, Between the Buried and Me
Genres: Mathcore, Hardcore

I have to be honest with you.  After Ire Works, I kind of lost touch with DEP.  I have just settled on Miss Machine being their go-to album for me because that is where I feel they did their best work.  But thanks to their PR guys, I was attacked by an onslaught of media through various websites promoting this new album.  The first thing I saw was that video for "When I Lost My Bet" and it blew me away.  Then a few days later I watched their live set on 2013 Golden Gods and seeing them still going berserk brought all those fond memories back to me.  I am still listening to this and I doubt it will replace Miss Machine for me, but so far it sounds really great.

Genres: Hip-hop

Goddamn you, Stones Throw Records, upping the ante again.  Just when I start thinking we are running out of cool ideas for record packaging, they go and think of something else that's neat.  This LP features a decal that can be pulled off to reveal the innards of Lord Quas.  Oh yeah, and the music is spectacular as usual too.

Illumination Ritual by The Appleseed Cast (2013)

Kind of Like: Moving Mountains, Old Canes, Explosions in the Sky
Genres: Indie, Post-rock, Emo, Experimental
Buy: Graveface
Preview: Pitchfork

Nowadays, it takes a lot to pull me away from school and label stuff to come visit this humble, little blog.  Appleseed Cast are just plain pioneers, and they have sense of nostalgia attached to them that few bands can emulate because, well, they have been around for awhile!  Mare Vitalis came out over 10 years ago, and there are songs on there that blow plenty of bands out of the water to this day.

I am only a couple songs into this release, but I really like it so far.  Sure, it isn't exactly groundbreaking, but it is fuckin' Appleseed Cast and they still have that sound that sets them apart, but there are hints of maturity along with an experimental vibe that bands tend to get to as they age.  Everyone come out of hibernation, come out from under the rocks and bad news, and greet the spring with this great album.

I Do Nothing But Regret The Fact That I Left by Disembarked (2013)

Kind of Like: Touche Amore, Suis La Lune, State Faults
Genres: Post-hardcore, Screamo
Preview:

These guys made it on our Best of List for 2012 with their self-titled EP, and we have been strong proponents of these guys since first hearing that EP.  It is very exciting to see these guys put out another really good EP in I Do Nothing But Regret The Fact That I Left.  It features the song "Bewildered" which was on our very first International Sampler last summer. Give these guys a good listen because I really think they are on the cusp of a break out in the states.

FUCK IT by 1994! (2013)

Kind of Like: Lightning Bolt, I Smell Blood
Genres: Punk, Noise Rock, Post-hardcore
Preview:

This new release from 1994! is a deviation from FCKYRHEAD, and was recorded really DIY (if you count iphone recordings).  The result is a guttural experience that will rock your brain in it's skull if listened through decent speakers (not your laptop).  The description on their bandcamp does a sufficient job describing it.  Speaking of 1994, this is the first time since 1994 that Michigan has been in the Elite Eight.  Looking really good for the Final Four right now at the half, sorry You'll Live, we're laying the smackdown on Florida...
