...And Silence Anchored Our Feet in Granite by Continents (2012)

Kind of Like: Bastions, Touche Amore, La Dispute
Genres: Post-hardcore, Screamo
Buy: Pike Records
Preview:

These guys are from Dresden.  Whenever I hear of Dresden, I think of the end of World War II.  Nazis or not, this was pretty shameful for the US to be a part of mass killings that were arguably unjustified.  Don't really read about that in our history books!

Anyways, these guys are solid, and I have been looking for German/European bands for something I am working on at the moment.  More news about that in a week or so.

Ohnomite by Oh No (2012)

Kind of Like: Madlib, Black Milk, Raekown
Genres: Hip-hop, Funk, Soul
Buy/Preview: Stones Throw

Talk about a family of musicians.  Oh no's brother is Madlib, his father is Otis Jackson, and his uncle is Jon Faddis.  It's been a bit since I listened to some fresh hip-hop material and this is certainly quenching my thirst for that.

Like Madlib, he was cali-bred, but has since been infusing his west coast funk with east coast techniques; immersing himself into the underground NYC rap scene and working on projects out there.

This album is long and has a long list of quality names: MF Doom, Guilty Simpson, Frank Nitty, etc etc.  This is a good one, folks.

Adaje releases first song off new LP!

If this song is any indication, this album is going to be some of Adaje's best work yet.  I am not sure who will end up putting this out on wax, but I have heard some speculation of Tiny Engines in the past couple months. Either way, I love seeing bands that we have put out move on to bigger and better things because everybody wins in the end.  Check these guys out while they are on tour, you can pick this up as a cd I believe form their shows.

Anomie by Animal Faces (2012)

BLAAEERGHHEAAGH
Kind of Like: Kidcrash, Native, Beau Navire
Genres: Screamo, Post-hardcore, Mathcore
Buy: A Mountain Far
Preview:

I posted on Animal Faces before with their release Analytical Dreaming.  I enjoyed that EP, but this is much improved as far as I'm concerned.  Dreaming had a couple really good songs on it, but after the initial excitement for this band wore off, I thought it could be expanded and refined even more.  This release shows maturation; they take their ideas and aren't satisfied with them alone.  They throw in transitions and breakdowns that remind me of the kind of flow that Kidcrash has to their material.

Hey, this is the 700th post.  Weird.

Sucker/Mommy 7" by California X (2012)

Kind of Like: Solids, The Sidekicks, Sonic Youth
Genres: Garage Rock, Indie, Pop Punk
Preview:

These guys opened up the show at Babetown.  This didn't strike me when listening to them live, but now that I am listening to these songs, they remind me a ton of Solids.  These two songs are really fun and strong.  As far as I can tell, this is the first offering from these guys.  They seem to be fairly new, but they are already starting to get some buzz, even overseas.

Sports EP by Speedy Ortiz (2012)

Kind of Like: Quilty, Grass is Green, Hop Along
Genres: Indie, Garage Rock/Grunge, Math Rock, Post-hardcore
Buy: 10"
Preview:

These guys played with Peace Be Still at Babetown in Amherst, MA.  As far as the shows went, this show had the most varied bands as far as genres/sound go, but they all were great.  Every band was really good, and I made a note that I would do a post for each of them.  The others were California X, You'll Live, and Life in Vacuum.

I am very excited to see these guys are doing a full US tour starting next month.  They have a Kalamazoo and Detroit date near the end of it, so hopefully they have safe travels!

The Dim Orange Lights by Bleeding Fractals (2012)

Kind of Like: Ted Nguyent, Lana Avacada, Leaf Routines
Genres: Math Rock, Emo, Post-hardcore, Screamo
Preview:

It's been awhile since I have looked into some of the lesser known bands.  It's been busy, the William Bonney preorders are my biggest project yet.  It's really hit or miss with bands that haven't really made a name for themselves yet, but when a band does it right, it can be pretty special.  These guys did it right; no bland poorly mixed demos; these guys put forth a crisp, fresh sounding release right out of the gate.  I have a bit of bands I want to cover, so this is a short review.  But, do yourself a favor and pick this one up.

Right Away, Great Captain - The Church of The Good Thief (2012)

FFO: Manchester Orchestra
Genre: Folk, Indie

Right Away, Great Captain  is the solo (acoustic) project of Andy Hull... Lead singer of Manchester Orchestra. He is a great song writer and his command of varying vocal styles can be powerful and emotive.
The final installment of the tale of the 17th century fisherman, who survives years unending at sea only to be drowned by the inevitable change, which he sees as consuming, replacing, forgetting his humble home and family in his absence.

So the pre-orders on the physicals are up and out already. But here is a free listen. Please purchase the music if you enjoy it.
