The Infinite Et Cetera by Lower Definition (2011)

Kind of Like: Dance Gavin Dance, Coheed & Cambria, Damiera
Genres: Post-Hardcore, Emo, Progressive,

I've started to put this album up a couple times now, but something has stopped me each time.  Something about the vocals reminds me of bands like Chiodos or something, and after listening for a bit it pisses me off.  I'm looking past that now and the music has merits, plus maybe you guys will like it.  I'm gonna stick with listening to No Omega for now, maybe I will come back to this again.

The Great White North by Norris (2011)

Kind of Like: Converge, The Red Chord, Gaza
Genres: Mathcore, Metal, Hardcore, Chaotic Hardcore

When I saw "For fans of Converge, The Red Chord, Dillinger Escape Plan, and Gaza", I was instantly pumped.  I don't see a great Dillinger connection as the other bands, but I'll give it to them.  It's nice to find another decent newer mathcore band to put up here though.  Give it a listen before you download if you want: Norris Bandcamp

Last Night on Earth by Noah and the Whale (2011)

Kind of Like: Neutral Milk Hotel, Bonnie Prince Billy, Belle & Sebastian
Genres: Indie, Folk

I haven't really listened to this band, but I know a lot of cool kids do.  It's not due out til next month I think, so people will want this.  I just found out that the name was derived from the film The Squid and the Whale, which was a pretty great movie.  It's pretty catchy.

Mind Bokeh by Bibio (2011)

Kind of Like: Boards of Canada, Baths, Black Moth Super Rainbow
Genres: Experimental, Electronica, Folk

I've seen a bunch of people getting into this guy lately. So when I saw this available a full month before its release I was all like, let's do this.  Also, I'm sure many a people are anticipating this album. Apparently, this album is less lo-fi and more electronic than his other albums, and people are upset about it.  I'm sure when Pitchfork puts it on Best New Music people will shut up.  I like this, but I think I'm gonna have to look at his older stuff.

Windmills by the Ocean II by Windmills by the Ocean (2011)

Kind of Like: Pelican, Red Sparowes, Latitudes, Earth
Genres: Sludge, Post-rock, Drone

The members from this band went on to form suchbands as 27, Anodyne, Isis, and Red Sparowes.  Apparently they have come back together to make more music because this came out a couple weeks ago. Here is a little bit more about them:

"These rock-based songs incorporate so many elements of “drone” the group could almost reside next to their celestial forefathers Sunn O))) and Earth, except with more melody… and drums. However, the usage of keyboard and electronic elements alongside several guitars make the album more comparable to Sigur Ros than Black Sabbath, but without compromising any of the heavy metal elements the members have become most-known for. The additional usage of improvisation and mild repetition allows the listener to relax into a slow headbang across five songs that each surpass the six-minute mark. But what makes this album most impressive is the triumphant, anthemic feel to it, especially considering the group never even made it to the live setting."

No Omega 7'' by No Omega (2011)

Kind of Like: The Carrier, Mountain Man, slow Converge
Genres: Hardcore

I had a feeling I would enjoy this band when I first saw the album cover.  These swedish d00ds play some really intense, emotional hardcore.  I almost wanted to call it screamo, but I would definitely put this under hardcore before screamo.  The album starts fast at first with "Ravens Fair", but halfway through the song they break down the fast part into a slow, brooding riff, and it pretty much stays at that pace for the rest of the album.  Not that that's a bad thing.

CSTVT 7" by CSTVT (2011)

Kind of Like: Grown Ups, Snowing, Joie De Vivre
Genres: Emo, Post-Hardcore

The band formerly known as Castevet until they were sued by some shitty metal band.  Here's a couple new songs by these twinkly guys.  I'm pretty happy they eased off on the grumbly low yelling vocals and instead is actually more like singing.

Kind of Like: Awesomeness
Genres: Punk, Hardcore, Ska, Screamo

No music to download here, just a little blurb about this year's fest.  They announced a lot of the line up and lets just say that if I hadn't been anxiously awaiting a nice pleasant Michigan summer so bad, I would totally skip it to get to October for this.  Check it out:

Have Orgasms Here

Branches Demo by Harbours (2011)

Kind of Like: Pianos Become the Teeth, Loma Prieta
Genres: Post-hardcore, Screamo

Demo from some newcomers from southern Cali.  Enjoy.

Deep Politics by Grails (2011)

Kind of Like: Earth, Red Sparrowes, Sun O)))
Genres: Drone, Doom, Post-Rock, Ambient

If you liked the new Earth album, you probably will like this.  It has more of a fullness to it; it isn't stripped bare like Earth's new album is.  Plenty of drone and doom going on here, but still a pretty laid back record.

Subvert the Dominant Paradigm by Noisear (2011)

Kind of Like: Social Infestation, Cattle Decapitation, Ed Gein
Genres: Grindcore

This is more of a death metal meets grindcore (deathgrind) band but there is no way I am throwing up three new obscure genres on the sidebar.

Empty Days & Sleepless Nights by Defeater (2011)

Kind of Like: Ruiner, Touche Amore, Have Heart
Genres: Post-Hardcore, Punk

So were you stoked on their release Dear Father not too long ago?  Well, it was to build up to this LP.  It has both of the songs that were on Dear Father, plus 12 more tracks.  So far from what I heard this is an extremely solid album.  Enjoy.

In A World of Reassurance by Unholy Tongues (2010)

Kind of Like:  Te, LITE, My Dad vs. Yours
Genres: Post-Rock, Indie, Shoegaze

If you like the band I just posted, then you will definitely be interested in this one.  A little more darker at times than the My Dad vs. Yours at times though.  Also more delay for sure, but they both don't use the formula that most post-rock bands use.

Little Symphonies by My Dad Vs. Yours (2011)

Kind of Like: Explosions in the Sky, Enemies, Sigur Ros
Genres: Post-Rock, Indie

My Dad vs. Yours is a post-rock band but they have a different formula.  They abandon the whole build up, climax, repeat dynamic for the most part.  They are described as more of an instrumental indie rock band.  Not much doom and gloom here either, just a happy sounding album.  And their songs never eclipse the 5 min mark.

Tracing by Innards (2010)

Kind of Like: Adobe Homes, Beau Navire, Caravels, Algernon Cadwallader
Genres: Screamo

This band is only like Algernon in the sense of all the noodly guitars going on.  The first thing I noticed was the recording quality of this album.  I went from listening to Manbearpig to this, and it's like the production took a step down.  I was turned off at first, but it isn't a deal breaker.  There are a lot of good things going on with this band, and some people would argue that the rawness adds to it all.  I would like better recorded drums in whatever they release next.  Cymbals sound like glass breaking and the bass drum is almost nonexistent.  There are still parts of this record that make me not really give a shit if the drums aren't recorded great.

Ruined Emo EP by Manbearpig (2011)

Kind of Like: Touche Amore, Defeater, Baton Rouge, Mane Horse
Genres: Screamo

If you like any of the above bands, you'll probably like this UK band.  After selling out this EP, they decided to be nice and make it available for free on the interwebs.

The Cosmic Birth & Journey of Shinju TNT by Akron/Family (2011)

Kind of Like: The Black Keys, Animal Collective
Genres: Experimental, Folk, Indie

It's hard picking bands that sound like this band; at times they have a bluesy Black Keys feel, and other times they are creating dense, electro-pop/folk/rock atmosphere kind of like Animal Collective.  Other times they sound like something else.  When I first heard of this band and knew they were coming out with an album, I found it on mediafire and I was like, why?  I later found out that they had leaked a couple fake albums that were basically electronica/noise garbage.  I finally got my hands on the actual release.  Here is the press release:

"After a slew of ignored deadlines, a cardboard box containing "four blown out song fragments on a TDK CDR in a ziplock bag, three pictures, and a typewritten note" landed on Dead Oceans' doorstep along with a "sincere but poorly made diorama." (The note contained helpful phrases such as "Do Not Erase / I Was Ak / Flourish.Flourish.Flourish./ Fuck Shit Up."). Somehow, that crate of detritus ultimately coalesced into Akron/Family II: The Cosmic Birth and Journey of Shinju TNT, a record purportedly written in a cabin built into the side of an active volcano in Akan National Park in Hokkaido, Japan and recorded in an abandoned train station in Detroit."

I assume they are referring to the Michigan Central Station in Detroit.  I also assume most of that excerpt is completely made up.  They're playing at PJ's Lagerhouse in Detroit on Tuesday, and I think that will make fore a good celebration of surviving midterms.

King of Limbs by Radiohead (2011)

Love American EP by Love American (2011)

Kind of Like: Pg. 99, Envy, Off Minor
Genres: Screamo, Post-Hardcore

Debut EP from this band.  They formed this past summer in Palmdale, California, and apparently a lot of people have been waiting for their EP to drop this year.  This album sounds promising fer sure, I'll keep an eye out for more from them in the future.  Think of Fall of Troy mixed with Off Minor.  Listen to "Then/Than" and try not to think of Fall of Troy with the like 6/8 time change.  Dun dun dun, dun dun dun.

Grief by Mountain Man (2011)

Kind of Like: Last Lights, Converge, Kerouac
Genres: Hardcore, Punk

The 17 track debut concept album from one of the more promising, rising hardcore bands, Mountain Man.  This is not to be confused with Mountain Man the folk trio touring with the Decemberists right now.  Most places are calling this a concept album because the songs are labeled as the 5 different stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and finally, acceptance.  But it's really hard to differentiate the different stages on this album.  Just think of it as a in-your-face, dark, blistering hardcore album dealing with grief.

Here is a teaser for the album.  Spoiler alert: it's mostly ambient until a minute in.

Also a warning, when I opened this album to play it, the songs are out of order and the artist and album section aren't labeled.  I will update this post once I find a better mediafire link.

Bad Time Zoo by Sims (2011)

Kind of Like: Doomtree, Despot, Atmosphere,
Genres: Hip-hop

I love the throwback beats; this is more old school kind of production.  I hate contemporary hip-hop, it's mostly garbage.  Not sure how I feel about this Sims guy's rapping, but so far I've liked it.

Small Loud by Very Okay (2011)

Genres: Indie, Pop punk

If a band featuring members of some of the finest bands in Brooklyn (Cheeky, Zombie Dogs, Potboiler, Thousandaires, Little Lungs, Each Others’ Mothers, Get Bent, and on and on and on…) seems like it’d probably be pretty great, well that’s because it is! This is their first EP and it’s full of awesome, fast, pop-punk! YES YES YES!!!

Kill The Man That Shot That Man by &U&I (2010)

Kind of Like: Blakfish, The Plot To Blow Up the Eiffel Tower, Hold Your Horse Is
Genres: Math Rock, Post-hardcore

"&U&I are a math rock/post-hardcore band from Birmingham, United Kingdom. The band is made up of the three remaining members of the much loved band, BlakFish, after former Blakfish guitarist/vocalist Sam Manville left the band whlist touring Europe with Biffy Clyro."

Alright, that was the last for my megaposting tonight.  Gonna get some studying in.

The Hoop by Crime in Choir (2004)

Kind of Like: Volta Do Mar, bygones, Sleeping People
Genres: Math Rock, Experimental, Progressive

I think this should sum it up for you:

"The group is comprised of founding members of the original At the Drive-In (pianist Kenny Hopper and guitarist Jarrett Wrenn), as well as members of Tussle (drummer Warren Huegal), Jonas Reinhardt (synthesizer player Jesse Reiner), The Mass (saxophonist Matt Waters) and bassist Jonathan Skaggs.

Life of Leisure EP by Washed Out (2009)

Kind of Like: Baths, Neon Indian, Cut Copy
Genres: Electronica, Chillwave

Happy Valentine's Day!  In case you haven't seen the new show on IFC called Portlandia, you are really missing out.  It's a show that basically pokes fun of hipsters that live in Portland, or hipsters in general for that matter.  It makes fun of people I know and even myself at times.  Anyways, the song "Feel It All Around" from this album is the the song featured in the opening sequence.  Also, Washed Out is going to be part of the Sasquatch festival in Oregon that looks to be only surpassed by Bonaroo (and The Fest) for the most bands I want to see in one place.  Here is a couple samples of the show:

Buffalo by The Phoenix Foundation (2011)

Kind of Like: The xx, Fleet Foxes, the 60's/70's/Beach Boys
Genres: Indie, Ambient, Electronica

This six piece is from New Zealand, how cool would it be to live there?  I mean aside from walking the path to Mordor, it just seems like a very beautiful place.  There is a transition here, and the transition is contained in the following sentence. The band conveys the beauty of this country through their music.

Sometimes I hate writing stuff in here. Here's two songs to sample. If you listen to the very end of the second song, you'll be greeted with a Ratatat-esque guitar solo.

Marnie Stern by Marnie Stern (2010)

Kind of Like: Tera Melos, Adebisi Shank, bygones
Genres: Experimental, Math Rock, Indie

I just found out about this girl because she is touring with Tera Melos.  A chick touring with Tera Melos?  What does she sound like?  Kinda like Tera Melos as it turns out.

Chariot by The Cast of Cheers (2010)

Kind of Like: Adebisi Shank, Enemies, BATS, Enemies
Genres: Experimental, Electronica, Indie, Math Rock

When I first heard Adebisi Shank, I thought the irish band was something new that was being birthed from the recent wave of math rock popularity.  After listening to The Cast of Cheers and BATS, it's become apparent that this is the hot thing going on in Ireland right now.  Spazzy, dancy electronica math rock driven by persistent thumping bass and snare drum.  I know that sounds like a lot of what's popular now, I guess just give it a listen.  These guys are a lot like Adebisi Shank, but much more vocals.

With Emperor Antarctica by Boy & Bear (2010)

Kind of Like: Local Natives, The Middle East, Mumford & Sons
Genres: Indie, Folk, Ambient

This band sounds eerily like Local Natives, especially the vocals.  And I think we can stop putting the word Bear in band names now, that would be cool.  They are from Australia; are there bears in Australia?  Besides koala bears?  I guess if they are referring to koala bears, I'm okay with that.

It's Getting Colder by We Made God (2011)

100 Other Lovers by DeVotchKa (2011)

Genres: Folk, Indie

Hey, remember that song "How It Ends" from the movie Little Miss Sunshine, that everyone fell in love with?  Well here is their new album that comes out March 1st (it leaked).

The Cold Still by The Boxer Rebellion (2011)

Kind of Like: Radiohead, Editors, White Lies, The National
Genres: Indie

"epic rock, somewhere between Radiohead, Elbow and the National".

If you love Radiohead, you will probably like The Boxer Rebellion. Or, just get bored with it after 3 songs.  Your choice.

Angels of Darkness, Demons of Light 1 by Earth (2011)

Kind of Like: Sun O))), Boris, Electric Wizard
Genres: Drone, Doom, Sludge

Chillest album of 2011.  An hour long of guitars, drums, bass, and a lone cello.  Surely, this will be boring to some.  The guitar tones are delicious though, and it's just the kind of music you let wash over you.

Kind of Like: Kanye West, Panacea, A Tribe Called Quest
Genres: Hip-hop

First hip-hop album put on here.  I have a soft spot for hip-hop, but I have been focusing on other things lately, and really haven't come across anything new worth putting up here.  I also think I didn't feel like adding another genre onto here.  I think this is worth it.  IMAKEMADBEATS (or NeMo) is a producer based in New York but came from Memphis and Orlando.  A couple lines from J Freedome in a freestyle on this album "IMAKEMADBEATS is a faggot/Lonely dude who grabs rap sheets but can’t speak/What, Transylvania, is that where you from?/Why you ain’t say nothing man, cat got your tongue?"  I like a good producer that understands he shouldn't start rapping.  Immagon' finish now.

Matilda by Stateless (2011)

Kind of Like: Radiohead, Baths, Ratatat
Genres: Electronica, Indie, Ambient

I remember when I first heard of this band their only release was Bloodstream EP.  I, instantly fell for the vocalist and downtempo beats.  Time went on, and after they didn't release anything else I kind of just forgot about them.  I just saw today that they just released this album, and I was excited to hear it.  It's pretty much exactly what I expected, in a good way.  Here is the first single to the album, it's alright, there are other songs on this I like much more:

Tao of the Dead by ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead (2011)

Kind of Like: Sparta, Les Savy Fav
Genres: Indie, Progressive, Experimental

Not as good as Source Tags & Codes, but still a great new release.  Can't wait to see them in a couple months.

Dear Father by Defeater (2011)

Kind of Like: Ruiner, Touche Amore, Have Heart

Tukwila Mockingbird by Herocop (2010)

Kind of Like: Faraquet, Giraffes? Giraffes!, Tera Melos
Genres: Math Rock, Experimental, Indie

I actually received an e-mail from this band, I really like some of the riffs in these songs; very catchy.  The only thing I would like would be a little better recording quality and I'd be really impressed.  They definitely remind me of Faraquet a lot.  They apparently used to be from Detroit and jam with guys from the Summer Pledge in a different band.  Now they're out in Seattle.  Looking forward to see what these guys do next.

Belongings by Charles the Osprey (2008)

Kind of Like: Russian Circles, Pelican, Talons
Genres: Post-Rock, Experimental, Hardcore, Metal

My friend from Grand Rapids just suggested this band from his city.  I'm surprised I never heard them before.  I really wanted to put their new LP "Consider" up here, but I can't find it anywhere.  This album is harder than "Consider", but still pretty sweet.  Think of Russian Circles with a little more unpredictability.  Now I see why he told me about them; they are playing at Founder's Brewery tonight in Grand Rapids.  I would love to see this band and have some delicious brew.  Must study...for exam...dammit.

Cerulean by Baths (2010)

Kind of Like: E*Vax (downtempo pre-Ratatat), Stateless, Dosh
Genres: Electronica, Chillwave, Ambient

Hip-hop continues to influence contemporary music.  This album is clearly beat driven, but it is pretty downtempo.  It makes out to be a great album to chillout to.  And just look at this puppy!:

Here is "Hall", the closing song of the album.  This is actually a less downtempo song from the album, I really like the whimsical vocals a little after halfway through.

Here's a link to the full album:
